Photo Sculpture by Kristin Doner
Kristin Doner returned to school late in life to reset her compass after 9/11. Attending Mills College in the Oakland hills brought her in touch with professors who would help her unleash her creativity like never before. Ron Nagle, Anna Murch and Hung Lieu had a hand in shaping her new direction. As an undergraduate, her Senior Thesis presentation featured photo sculpture made from digital photography obsessively collected over a three year period. The photos were printed on regular bond paper, rubbed with mineral oil, and stitched together using thick black cotton thread. The resulting sculpture has a feeling of looking at someone else's reality; the objects are familiar but in the wrong combination.
